What lorem ipsum is actually for

Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin, loosely derived from a passage of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum written in 45 BC. Typesetters have used it since the 1500s for one reason: it looks like language without being readable as language. That matters, because the moment placeholder text is legible, everyone in the room starts editing the words instead of critiquing the layout.

Used properly, it lets you test line length, leading, paragraph spacing and the grey texture a block of type creates on the page. A heading that works at four words often falls apart at twelve, and you only find that out by pouring text in.

When to use something else

Lorem ipsum has a very even word length and no English word frequency, so it under-tests real interfaces. If you're designing a product page, a dashboard or anything with names, numbers and dates in it, use realistic dummy content instead, actual-looking product titles, plausible prices, believable user names.

Never ship it. Lorem ipsum reaching production is common enough that Google indexes thousands of pages containing it, and on a live site it reads as abandonment. Search a codebase for "lorem" before any launch.

Picking the right amount

Generating by paragraph is right for article and blog layouts. Generating by sentence suits cards, list items and meta descriptions where you need to test a specific character budget. Generating by word is best for headings, buttons and navigation labels, where one word too many breaks the line.

A useful habit is to generate more than you expect to need and then delete. Designs tend to be tested with the amount of copy the designer hopes for rather than the amount the writer will actually deliver.
